St Mary’s Carol Service

The school community enjoyed another lovely evening at the annual FJS Carol Service last week.

With ukulele playing from Year 3; a take on Rudyard Kipling’s ‘If’ from Year 4; a wonderfully mouthwatering round from Year 5; and beautiful reading and singing from Year 6; the evening was a great success and a truly festive occasion. The school choir and orchestra also did us proud.

Thank you to all who came along to join in and to the children and staff for their hard work.

Governors’ update

It’s been business as usual for school governors in the last couple of weeks, with governors visiting school on many occasions.

The Curriculum and Welfare Committee met to discuss the first set of school performance data and were also interested to see presentations from Mrs Robertson about the geography and history curriculum and about the software the school uses for recording any welfare or behaviour concerns. The software is particularly useful in building a picture of patterns of behaviour or concern, by bringing together individual pieces of information logged by different members of staff.

Link Governors have also been into school to discuss specific subject areas with their leads, including Maths with Mr Woodger, English with Mrs Ovenden and Behaviour with Mrs Robertson.

As well as the more ‘serious’ side of school life, we have also been privileged to spend time with children, enjoying work sharing events and the walk to and from church – congratulations to all the children and staff on a lovely, festive and well-executed Christmas Service at St Mary’s!

A very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to all of our school community – here’s to 2018!

School Choir – Jingle All the Way!

Jingle Bells, Jingle Bells…….all the way

Oh what fun …..we all had singing Christmas Carols and songs to the delightful pensioners at their Christmas Lunch at Avonway Community Centre today.

Some 30 very excited children wrapped up warm to walk to the venue before their centre-stage performance. Once in Royal David’s City, Away in a Manger and Winter Wonderland were just some of the songs that the choir sang to entertain the audience – some of whom could not resist joining in too. Once again, the choir were amazing and sang beautifully.

Thank you also to the wonderful helpers.

Choir performs at lights switch on

LIGHTS, CAMERA, ACTION!

On a cold and crisp night last Friday evening, the choir did a fantastic performance at the Christmas Lights switch on in the Market Square in Fordingbridge.

After clambering up the steps of a big open truck to get onto the stage, microphones and lights were waiting for them to sing their songs.  The packed audience waited patiently for Santa to arrive before the choir sang their songs beautifully, together with the brass band.  Because they sang so well, they were asked to perform ‘We Wish you a Merry Christmas’ again!

It was a fantastic evening and everyone enjoyed themselves. Well done to the choir.

School Council has Lunch with HC3S

School Council was invited for a special lunch with HC3S to discuss school dinners at FJS, which may have an impact in schools across Hampshire. We were treated to a free school lunch and some new menu creations as we discussed our likes and dislikes on the menu as well as our ideas for new choices. School Council will be asking children across the school to voice their opinions and we are working on a competition to spice up the school menu coming to a classroom near you soon!

Toilet Twinning

Fordingbridge Junior School is now a toilet twinned school!

Thanks to donations, we are very proud that our toilets are now twinned with a school toilet block in Bolero, Rumphi District, Malawi.

1 in 3 people worldwide don’t have a loo, so FJS decided to get involved in Toilet Twinning to help flush away poverty. For more information please see www.toilettwinning.org

Thank you for your support.

Children in Need 2017

On Friday 17th November, FJS opened its doors to a variety of costumes beginning with the letter C. Children (and staff) came creatively dressed as cowboys, cats, crocodiles and Captain Underpants! We embraced the day with a collection of wonderful characters and raised lots of money for Children in Need. The children worked in their classes to create coin art display using the coins they collected. After school, cakes of all shapes and sizes were sold by their hundreds in the hall.

Thank you to everyone who donated money, cakes and time in creating costumes for the children to wear.

Anti-Bullying Afternoon

Friday afternoon was spent in house groups at FJS, learning about Anti-Bullying. This year’s theme was ‘All Different All Equal’. The children discussed how boring it would be if we were all the same. Film clips from Zootopia and Diary of a Wimpy Kid were used to understand bullying behaviour and to show how trying to make our friends ‘cool’ isn’t necessarily the best way to support people who aren’t like us.

Finally, children passed two apples around the circle. The first apple was complimented with kind words and the second spoken to with mean words. When we cut the apples open, we realised one apple had been bruised inside by the unkind words and, therefore, how much effect those unkind comments have on a person deep inside.

It was a fantastic session for the children (and staff).

Winter Warmer

We held a Winter Warmer reading evening this term for some of our Year 3 and 4 pupils and their parents/grandparents. It was all about reading stories aloud for enjoyment and pleasure and encouraging readers to read before bedtime.

Children came back to school in their pyjamas and onesies and enjoyed hot chocolate and biscuits whilst they shared a book with their parents/grandparents.

It was a wonderful evening and we look forward to running it again in the future.
