Safety Day 2018

On Friday 28th September we held our annual Safety Day in school. The children enjoyed the activities designed to raise their awareness of ways they can keep themselves safe. All the year groups discussed what to do in and emergency, how to call for help and stranger danger. Then Year 3 learned about Road Safety, Year 4 looked at how they can stay safe at the beach, Year 5 learned about Fire Safety and actions to take in the case of a fire and Year 6 talked about Fireworks and how to make sure the Firework code is followed.

Kwik Cricket Tournament

On Monday 18th June 2018, me and fellow FJS students went to a Kwik Cricket tournament in Fawley. We all loved it and I personally thought it was awesome. We played 160 minutes altogether and we were left exhausted. We won 2 out of 4 games, which is good for not having much experience.

From Year 6 Connor, Sam, Max, Will and Ethan played. From Year 4, Sid and Hector played.

A big thank you to Ms Mays and Mr Harris for taking us. 🙂

Big Sing for Schools Festival

We had BIG fun at the BIG Singing Festival at St Mary’s Church on Monday this week surrounded by the wonderful banners made by our school the previous week.  As part of the Fordingbridge Music and Arts Festival, our school together with other schools in the area, were invited to a singing workshop to learn new songs.

Twenty children from school gathered at the church and were taught many different songs, including lots of fun warm-up songs and African songs which sounded amazing.  Susie Lamb from Salisbury Cathedral School ran the workshop and parents and spectators were able to watch them perform at the end.

Everyone enjoyed themselves.  Thank you to Revd Canon Gary Philbrick for arranging this festival and to Susie Lamb for teaching such inspirational songs.

Internet Safer Day 2018

On Friday 9th February the whole school took part in celebrating Internet Safer Day.

This year the theme was :Create, Connect and Share Respect. A better internet starts with you. During a  whole school assembly we spoke about taking responsibility for our actions online and always considering the consequences of our online activity, as well as how we can make others feel.

It was then back to our classes to discuss and share our thoughts on not only keeping ourselves safe online, but also exploring that it is so difficult to get rid of anything posted online and how our digital footprint is there to stay.

To end the afternoon we all set ourselves a good deed to complete online to make ourselves of others feel better about themselves. It will be great to hear how many of us have completed our good deeds.

Curriculum Evening Links

Parents and carers spent an interesting evening learning about different aspects of the school curriculum last week.

Mrs Robertson gave an informative presentation about SMSC and what the children are taught throughout their time in the school. There is an emphasis on consent and the right to say ‘no’ and Mrs Robertson showed parents how the school makes use of resources from organisations like the NSPCC to get messages across in an entertaining way.

Mrs Ovenden then talked to parents about spellings and how to improve them – not just in tests but within the children’s writing. She talked about links between words, word families and described many different ways of helping children to remember spellings.

Mrs Papworth followed with an important talk about internet safety. She impressed upon parents and carers that, while school can play its part in ensuring children are safe online, there is also a lot parents can do, in terms of both education and ensuring technology is set up to protect them.

Finally Mr Woodger woke us all up with some Maths problems, delivering a very interesting presentation which explained some of methods used to build the children’s knowledge of Maths – many of which are unrecognisable to those who were at school decades ago!

Mrs Ovenden summed up the evening by saying: “Supporting the children at home with all aspects of their education can only reap benefits for them in so many ways.”
